Teacher Training Testimonials
“Lori Belilove trains beautiful Duncan dancers—any dancer serious about teaching and performing Isadora Duncan’s works should consider this certification program. My training under Lori’s mentorship has led me to teaching in a range of contexts, including private studios, festival workshops, and university residencies. As a performance coach, Lori is detailed and exacting, facilitating dancers’ discovery of nuance in musicality and qualities of weight, and encouraging dancers to experience freedom within the sculptural form of Duncan’s dances.”
— Meg Brooker, MFA, is Assistant Professor & Director of Dance at Middle Tennessee State University and Artistic Director of Duncan Dance South, a founding organizer of Isadora Duncan International Symposium, and a former company dancer with Lori Belilove & Company. She holds an Advanced Certification in Duncan Technique and Repertory, under the mentorship of Lori Belilove.

“Prior to this experience I only knew about Isadora in the context of a dance history lesson, and the process of not only uncovering this rich history but seeing it and feeling it fully alive and breathing in today’s world has been immensely rewarding. Belilove is a masterful educator and brings incredible knowledge and sensitivity to her classes. Her approach to Duncan is inquisitive and inviting, and the total experience has reaffirmed for me that both movement and education flourish in a joyous, creative setting.”
– Becky Allen, MFA, MA in Dance Education, is a company dancer with Lori Belilove & The Isadora Duncan Dance Company and works for The Isadora Duncan Dance Foundation, managing Educational Programming in addition to assisting and teaching Duncan dance classes. She is also a Teaching Artist with New York City Ballet and founder of LatticeWorks Dance Collective.

2024

Dear colleagues,

It is my great pleasure to share with you the schedule of the Second Symposium on Middle Eastern, North African and Central Asian Dances, Music and Performing Arts <https://www.menaca2024.com/schedule/>  (MENACA 2024), to be held in-person on the campus of Pomona College in Claremont, California, from 3-6 October 2024. At this link you will find full details of scheduling, speakers, and abstracts, as well as how to register to participate online. There is no registration fee to attend. The symposium is hosted by the Dance Department of Pomona College.

Our program this year offers scholarly papers, two keynote speakers, movement workshops, a film screening, and a dance concert providing a rich scholarly context in which dialogue and debate are encouraged.

This year we have the great honour to present two distinguished keynote speakers, Amir Hosein Pourjavady <https://www.facebook.com/amirhosein.pourjavady>, master musician and ethnomusicologist specialised in Persian music, and dancer and researcher Suhaila Salimpour <https://suhaila.com/>, a pioneer in Middle Eastern dance. We have also organized a roundtable on publishing and research in which scholars, editors and librarians will discuss the paths and pitfalls of publishing on the topic of MENACA performing arts, providing a useful perspective on this academic activity for prospective students and scholars.

The scholarly papers will be presented in four interdisciplinary panels offering participants an opportunity to connect with scholars who focus on current and past contexts of the dance, music and performing arts of the MENACA area.

 * In the panel /Dabke: Practice as Resistance/ dance scholars and
researchers will introduce how this dance articulates a form of
political resistance and how it has become a reference in the
construction of identity for Palestinian diasporas in Latin America
and other areas of the world.
 * The panel /Current Trends in Middle Eastern Dance and Music/
provides a common scope on bellydance and Middle Eastern music
focusing on the following themes: the analysis of the production of
diasporic urban landscapes in Toronto (Canada); the development of a
research group of Brazilian MENACA dance historians that deploy
social media to address historical constructs toward orientalism
among other historically biased labels; the staging of melancholia
in Egyptian Golden Era dance sequences, and the deployment of
musical references in Najib Mahfuz’s novel “Cairo Trilogy”.
 * The panel /Envisioning Decolonialism/ presents four papers providing
four different perspectives on decolonising practices. A first paper
observes the strategies of a new generation of Tuareg performers
that challenges the role of exile in decolonial imagination through
historical poems and songs. A second presentation will tackle how
the feminisation of Amazigh (Berber) pop songs favours the
revitalisation of endangered Amazigh languages in Morocco. A third
paper will debate the role of Stambalism (dance and music rite) in
the re-signification of post-2011 Tunisian identity, and a fourth
presentation will focus on the process of mental mapping and
categories of construction within the Ukranian bellydance community
facing both Russian invasion and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
 * The rich dance and performing arts heritage of the vast region of
/Turkey and the Persianate world/ is represented in the fourth panel
of the symposium. In this panel the first paper will analyse the
symbolic role of dance in the processes of modernisation and nation
building in Turkey at the turn of the 20th. century; a second
presentation will focus on the development of staged Uzbek dance
during the interwar period of the 20th century; the third paper
discusses the role of female acrobats and equestrians from a
visual-textual perspective in the pre-modern Persianate world
(Safavid, Mughal, and Qajar contexts); the fourth paper focuses on
the historical roots of Uzbek dances chronicling the emergence of
dance schools and the inclusion of these as part of the UNESCO
Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity program; the multicultural
background of Khuzestan (Iran) dances, their movement patterns and
their connection with festive occasions such as weddings,
constitutes the theme of the last presentation of this panel.

There will be a dance concert after the theoretical and practical sessions on Saturday evening. Two dance workshops have been organized for Sunday morning to complement the scholarly papers presented above, seeking to expand the knowledge of the dances of this area. We shall also be screening the film “The Fez Documentary,” about the golden years of the Middle Eastern community in Los Angeles, which will be introduced by our guest of honour Roxanne Shalaby.

Attached to this email is a leaflet that can be printed and posted. I would be grateful for your assistance to help spread the word about the symposium among colleagues, scholars, performers, etc.

Looking forward to welcoming you at Pomona, whether in-person or virtually. Please do not hesitate to be in touch with the organizing committee via menaca2023@gmail.com; we remain at your disposal for any inquiry you might have regarding the symposium.

Louise Reichlin & Dancers, a performing company of Los Angeles Choreographers & Dancers, will be streaming three reimagined sections of her critically acclaimed 1990-92 work Urban and Tribal Dances recorded for this at the Ivy Substation in Culver City plus a new filmic version of Alone 2020. Although live audiences are still not allowed, these four will be shown FREE on the company’s channel Vimeo.com/showcase/urbanandtribaldances. Louise Reichlin is Director/Choreographer, with costumes by Linda Borough and media created by Audri Phillips when Remembrance was revised in 2012. BdA Press Release: Dancing Caravane Project – La Caravane Dansante

Ballet des Amériques/Carole Alexis Company will perform LIVE next Saturday at 3pm at Gantry State Park in LI City, Queens! We’ll be performing an array of spectacular and moving works of a myriad of styles, choreographed by the inventive and ingenious Carole Alexis

Don’t miss out on this opportunity to witness a live performance safely.

At a time when the doors of most performing arts institutions and theaters remain closed, Ballet des Amériques/Carole Alexis Company is determined to stalwartly soldier on, under the auspices of its staunch, tenacious leader, director, and choreographer, Carole Alexis. For, the visceral emotions and awe-inspiring athleticism of dance do not properly translate virtually. Like most performing arts institutions, Ballet des Amériques/Carole Alexis Company was thrown for a loop by the pandemic. Prior to its emergence, the company was basking in the glow of success from a sold-out international tour to Tropiques Atrium Scène Nationale in Fort-de-France, Martinique, and preparing for its NYC premiere at Symphony Space in Manhattan. It has become the onus of dance institutions to adapt to our present international health crisis and find new, innovative ways to reach audiences.

Ultimately, Ballet des Amériques/Carole Alexis Company has stepped up to that challenge: embarking on its newest mission: to execute an array of performances throughout the NY-metro area, and, ultimately, the nation and world. With outdoor, “pop-up,” mobile shows (including a portable, sprung floor that is already in BdA’s possession), the company aspires to provide affordable, donation-based presentations, with an emphasis on proactive, assertive outreach to and within lower-income areas. Overall, the opportunity to experience live performance during this time is unique and valuable. In our current era—where over 200,000 homes have lost a loved one, and millions are unemployed; experiencing economic insecurity, as the country plunges into another recession—it is salient to provide an avenue for escapism; allowing audience members brief repose from the present chaos in the vein of USO Camp Shows during World War II. Through these widely-accessible displays, audience members—who may have never before seen a professional dance performance—will discover a new appreciation for dance and performing arts in general; buoying much-needed support for the performing arts; generating a new population of theater-goers, cognoscenti, and aficionados. Limbs outstretched and zeal tangible, Ballet des Amériques/Carole Alexis Company’s dancers and Alexis’s poignant choreography relate to themes including peace, love, and diversity, and leave viewers feeling profoundly moved. Thus, with the cleaves/fractures that exist in our present society, performing works with uplifting, consciousness-awakening, and enlivening themes can aid in establishing unity. Performances will be carried out safely, with a commitment to the disease prevention guidelines produces by the CDC. Likewise, enabling professional performers to retain employment when plausible is vital for preserving these artists’ ability to express themselves and engage in their passion while safeguarding their livelihoods.

For Immediate Release

Calling all Performing Artists: Mark DeGarmo Dance Seeks Applicants for the 2020-2021 season of its Virtual Salon Performance Series: a sharing of works-in-progress with a facilitated audience response curated and facilitated by dancer, choreographer, writer, and researcher, Dr. Mark DeGarmo.

Apply now via Google Form: https://forms.gle/Ns6KfavbAjkR26fLA Deadline: August 1st, 2020 at 11:55PM.* *The application form will stay open as needed, but preferential consideration will be given to those artists who apply by August 1st.

Mark DeGarmo Dance seeks applicants for the 2020-2021 season of its Virtual Salon Performance Series, a showcase of original artistic works-in-progress with a facilitated audience response session. Performing artists are invited to apply via the above GoogleForm by Saturday, August 1st, 11:55PM. All Virtual Performances will be held on Zoom.

Founded in 2010, MDD’s Salon Performance Series provides an opportunity to view and engage with original performing arts and dance works-in-progress of guest artists. The 2019-2020 season featured 51 artists/performers in 9 salons, the final 3 of which were held virtually on Zoom.

The series highlights artists and performing art and dance forms underrepresented in traditional and commercial performing arts venues nationally and internationally. Artists from these underrepresented groups, genres, and spaces are especially encouraged to apply.

Dr. Mark DeGarmo curates the series and facilitates audience response sessions during each installment by adapting Liz Lerman’s Critical Response Process. DeGarmo guides discourse among the artists and audience members and encourages the public to actively participate in the development of original works-in-progress.

Originally housed in Mark DeGarmo Dance Studio Theater 310 at The Clemente Center, where MDD has been an anchor resident member nonprofit organization since 2001, MDD’s Salon Performance Series works to support the Clemente’s mission, and its determination “to operate in a multicultural and inclusive manner, housing and promoting artists and performance events that fully reflect the cultural diversity of the Lower East Side and the city as a whole.”
