Mahala Dance Class led by Judit Abraham
In this dance class, we work with the basic steps and movements of mahala, a solo female dance style. Starting from the core motifs of the Szászcsávás and Moldavian mahala dances, we gradually progress toward a more developed stage-oriented performing arts style. Due to its origins, Turkish Romani and Rajasthani Romani attitudes and movement qualities also appear in the dance.
After warm-up exercises, we practice the basic steps, followed by a Mahala choreography. Everyone is welcome, from beginners to advanced dancers.
Mahala is a modern folk dance form that first became popular within Transylvanian Romani communities, and was later adopted in some places by dancers of other nationalities as well. Through her studies of Indian Rajasthani and Turkish Romani dances, Judit Abraham developed a unique stage version of this dance style. In this form, motifs of Eastern belly dance are blended with mudras from Indian classical dance, along with delicate Romani dance steps and hip movements.

Mahala Gipsy Dance Classes at Budapest
Mahala dance is part of the Transylvanian and Moldavian Gypsy dances, it is a more recent dance, its motifs and the rhythm of its music originate from the Balkans and Middle Eastern countries (Turkey). It is an improvisational free dance that contains many belly dance elements.

Hungarian/ Moldavian “chango” dances and singing lessons!
“Mahala” gipsy dance
At the session, we can learn about the various types of Moldovan dances, from the basics to the higher levels. We study the hidden techniques of round dances, line dances, couple dances, as well as individually danced mahala dance. Taking into account the aspects of Indian dance art with its sophisticated technique, we shape these dances into harmonious details.
The topic of the next session: small round dances, mahala.
At the end of the session, we will learn Moldavian songs (old type Hungarian songs). Getting to know the dialect words of the songs, as well as their content meaning, also plays an important role. This gives us more insight into the old village culture from which these dances and songs originate.
